Top-Level Domain (TLD) List

Every top-level domain in the IANA root zone database, with the WHOIS server IANA lists and the RDAP endpoint W.is uses. Select a TLD to see its servers, example lookup commands and FAQs.

The IANA root zone database lists 1,595 top-level domains. 1,435 of them are active: 1,110 generic TLDs (gTLDs), 306 country-code TLDs (ccTLDs), 15 sponsored TLDs, 3 generic-restricted TLDs and the infrastructure TLD .arpa. 151 of the active TLDs are internationalized domain names (IDNs) with non-ASCII characters, such as .рф or .中国.

1,207 active TLDs (84%) have an RDAP endpoint and 873 publish a port-43 WHOIS server; 68 have neither. The remaining 160 TLDs are retired, unused or test TLDs, listed at the end of this page. The most recent IANA record change in this dataset is from .

Retired, unused & test TLDs

These 160 TLDs appear in the IANA database but are retired, not in use, or were only delegated for testing (11 IDN test TLDs retired in 2013). None of them has an RDAP or WHOIS service.

TLD types explained

Generic TLDs (gTLDs)

Open, community or brand extensions such as .com, .org, .xyz and .app. Most of today's gTLDs were added through ICANN's New gTLD Program, which delegated its first TLDs in 2013. gTLD registries are bound by ICANN contracts that require RDAP, so every active gTLD in this list has an RDAP endpoint.

Country-code TLDs (ccTLDs)

Two-letter extensions mostly based on ISO 3166-1 country codes, such as .de and .jp (.uk is a well-known exception, as the ISO code is GB), plus internationalized ccTLDs in local scripts. Each ccTLD registry sets its own policies, so WHOIS and RDAP support varies widely.

Sponsored and generic-restricted TLDs

Sponsored TLDs serve a specific community, for example .gov, .edu and .aero. The generic-restricted TLDs .biz, .name and .pro were originally intended for businesses, individuals and professionals.

Infrastructure TLD

.arpa is reserved for Internet infrastructure, such as reverse DNS lookups under in-addr.arpa and ip6.arpa.

How W.is uses this list

When you look up a domain, W.is picks the RDAP endpoint for its TLD from this data and falls back to WHOIS when RDAP is unavailable or incomplete. The data comes from IANA's root zone database and RDAP bootstrap registry, plus a few RDAP endpoints W.is has tested manually. Browse the servers directly in the RDAP server list and the WHOIS server list, or learn what RDAP is and how it compares in RDAP vs WHOIS.
