What transferPeriod means

transferPeriod shows that the domain moved to a new registrar within the last few days and is in the transfer grace period, typically 5 days for gTLDs. In RDAP it appears as transfer period.

It is part of the Registry Grace Period extension in RFC 3915: if the new (gaining) registrar deletes the domain during this period, the registry credits the transfer fee back to it.

The status is informational and confirms that the transfer has completed. It disappears automatically when the period ends.

Why a domain has this status

  • A transfer from another registrar has just completed.

What you should do

  • If you transferred the domain, there is nothing to do: the status confirms that the transfer succeeded. Check the new registrar and expiration date in a lookup.
  • Turn the transfer lock back on at your new registrar if it isn't enabled automatically.
  • If you did not authorize a transfer, contact both your old and your new registrar immediately. Registrars can challenge unauthorized gTLD transfers under ICANN's Transfer Dispute Resolution Policy.

Look up any domain to see its current status codes, registrar, expiration date and name servers from the registry's RDAP or WHOIS service.

  • pendingTransfer: A transfer of the domain to a new registrar has been requested and is waiting to be approved, rejected or completed automatically.
  • clientTransferProhibited: The registrar has locked the domain against transfers to another registrar, the standard protection against domain hijacking.
  • addPeriod: The domain was registered within the last few days (usually 5 for gTLDs) and is in its add grace period. This status is informational only.
  • renewPeriod: The domain was renewed within the last few days (usually 5 for gTLDs) and is in its renew grace period; no action is needed.

Frequently asked questions

Can I transfer my domain again during transferPeriod?

Usually not straight away. Under ICANN's Transfer Policy, a registrar may refuse a transfer request made soon after a previous transfer, and many registrars also lock recently transferred domains. Check your new registrar's policy.

Did the transfer add time to my registration?

For most gTLDs, a transfer between registrars extends the registration by one year. Look up the domain to confirm its new expiration date.
